ผลการวิจัยซึ่งตีพิมพ์ในวารสาร Sciencetific Reports ฉบับวันที่ 11 ม.ค. 64 ได้รายงานว่า เทคโนโลยีการรู้จำใบหน้าสามารถทำนายทัศนคติหรือจุดยืนทางการเมืองของบุคคลได้อย่างแม่นยำจากรูปโปรไฟล์ในเฟซบุ๊ก โดยอัลกอริทึมที่ทดสอบมีความแม่นยำในการทำนายมากกว่าการทดสอบบุคลิกภาพหรือการวิเคราะห์ของมนุษย์
จากงานวิจัยของนาย Michal Kosinski รองศาสตราจารย์จากมหาวิทยาลัยสแตนฟอร์ดในสหรัฐฯ ได้ใช้อัลกอริทึมของระบบการรู้จำใบหน้าเรียนรู้รูปใบหน้าบุคคลกว่า 1,085,795 รูปจากรูปโปรไฟล์ในสื่อสังคมออนไลน์ โดยรูปกว่า 977,777 รูป นำมาจากผู้ใช้งานเว็บไซต์หาคู่ออนไลน์ในสหรัฐฯ อังกฤษ และแคนาดา และอีก 108,018 รูปนำมาจากผู้ใช้งานเฟซบุ๊กในสหรัฐฯ ซึ่งผู้ใช้งานทั้งหมดได้เผยแพร่ทัศนคติทางการเมืองของตัวเองบนสื่อสังคมออนไลน์ นอกจากนี้ยังได้ทำแบบทดสอบบุคลิกภาพอีกจำนวน 100 ข้อ
อัลกอริทึมได้เปรียบเทียบคุณลักษณะของใบหน้าบุคคลและหาค่าเฉลี่ยเพื่อตรวจสอบลักษณะใบหน้าของบุคคลที่มีแนวคิดอนุรักษ์นิยมหรือเสรีนิยม ผลปรากฎว่าอัลกอริทึมสามารถทำนายได้อย่างแม่นยำ โดยมีความแม่นยำในการทำนายทัศนคติทางการเมืองจากรูปใบหน้าผู้ใช้งานเฟซบุ๊กในสหรัฐฯ อยู่ที่ร้อยละ 73 จากผู้ใช้งานเว็บไซต์หาคู่ออนไลน์ในสหรัฐฯ อังกฤษ และแคนาดา อยู่ที่ร้อยละ 72 ร้อยละ 70 และร้อยละ 71 ตามลำดับ ซึ่งแม่นยำกว่าการทดสอบบุคลิกภาพและการวิเคราะห์ของมนุษย์อยู่ที่อัตราร้อยละ 66 และร้อยละ 55
